Can I set limits on how much time I spend gambling online, and how does that work?

Yes — and the tools available to you as an Ottawa player on any regulated Ontario site are more robust than most people realize. Here's how the system actually works, layer by layer.
Three types of limits, all mandatory
Every regulated gaming site in Ontario must meet the AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming, which require operators to provide, at minimum, spend-limit and time-limit setting tools, as well as the ability to take a short-term break or self-exclude for a longer term. Specifically, operators must offer players the option to set deposit limits (capping how much you can load into your account over a chosen period) and loss limits (restricting the net amount you can lose). On top of those financial controls, time limits let you cap the total amount of time you spend playing over a defined period — for example, no more than two hours per day.
You can choose to apply any of these limits over the course of 24 hours, 7 days, or a month. Financial and time limit functions must be easy to find, reach, and initiate or change at any time after you've registered and opened an account. You're also offered the chance to set loss and deposit limits right at the point of registration, so you don't have to go hunting for them later.
The cooling-off rule — the detail that actually matters
The part of this system that catches people off guard: where a gaming limit has been previously established by a player, a request to relax or eliminate that limit can only be implemented after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours. The operator cannot relax or eliminate a gaming limit without a request from you, and only after that cooling-off period has expired. In plain terms — you can tighten a limit instantly, any time, but loosening one requires a deliberate wait. That friction is intentional and built into the rules.
There's also a passive time-awareness feature worth knowing about: during slots sessions, the gaming system must clearly display your net position in Canadian dollars, and you must have the means to track the passage of time. You'll also be clearly notified when a game or gaming session ends because a limit has been reached.
If you want to step further back: BetGuard
For a more complete break, Ontario now has a centralized self-exclusion program. iGaming Ontario has launched BetGuard, a centralized self-exclusion program that allows players to register to take a break from all regulated online gambling websites in Ontario in a single request. Term lengths are clearly defined and include six-month, one-year, and five-year options. A custom term is also available. You can reach BetGuard at betguard.ca.
Every fully registered and approved Ontario operator displays both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos — seeing those logos confirms the site is managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO. That's a quick way to verify you're playing somewhere the above rules actually apply.
