Do I have to pay tax on online casino winnings in Ottawa?
taxes · Last reviewed June 19, 2026
For most Ottawa residents playing at regulated Ontario online casinos, the short answer is: no, you don't owe tax on your winnings. But there's a real and important exception that a meaningful number of players fall into — so it's worth understanding the full picture.
The general rule: gambling wins are not taxable income
Lottery winnings of any amount are not taxable, unless the prize can be considered income from employment, a business or property, or a prize for achievement. The CRA applies the same logic to casino and online gambling wins. Non-taxable amounts include most lottery winnings, most gifts and inheritances, and payments from programs like the GST/HST credit and the Canada child benefit. Gambling winnings sit in that same non-taxable bucket for the typical recreational player.
This is confirmed directly in the CRA's own audit guidance: lottery and certain other winnings are non-taxable in Canada — however, if the taxpayer is in the business of gambling, consider the proceeds and losses for income tax purposes.
The exception: when gambling becomes a business
Here's where it gets more nuanced. An individual's gambling activities may result in taxable business income or a business loss if the gambling activities constitute a source of income — that is, carrying on the business of gambling. Determining the commerciality of gambling can be challenging.
There's no bright-line dollar threshold that flips you from "recreational player" to "gambling business." The CRA looks at the overall picture: do you approach gambling systematically, with skill, discipline, and a genuine profit motive that goes beyond simply wanting to win? A recreational slots player who has a lucky month is nowhere near that line. A professional poker player who treats the game as their primary income source is a different story entirely. If you're unsure where you stand, a tax professional is the right call — this is a facts-and-circumstances question, not one with a universal answer.
One thing that IS taxable: returns on your winnings
Even if your casino winnings themselves are tax-free, any income you earn by investing those winnings is not. Income earned on any of the above amounts is taxable — for example, any interest that you earn when you invest lottery winnings must be reported on your return. So if you take a big win and park it in a GIC or savings account, the interest you earn from that point forward goes on your T1 as normal investment income.
Playing on a regulated Ontario site matters
None of this tax treatment changes based on which platform you use — but playing on a site properly registered under iGaming Ontario's framework means you're operating in the legal market, which matters for your own peace of mind and record-keeping. Legitimate Ontario-registered sites display both the iGaming Ontario logo and the BetGuard logo; that's a quick visual check that you're in the regulated market rather than an offshore grey-market operator.
Keep records of significant wins and losses regardless — if the CRA ever has questions, documentation helps. And if your gambling activity is serious enough that you're genuinely uncertain about the business-income question, speak with a Canadian tax professional. The CRA's own guidance on this topic lives in Income Tax Folio S3-F9-C1 on canada.ca.
