Do Ontario online casinos issue any kind of tax slip or official document for winnings?

If you're wondering whether you'll get a T4 or T5 in the mail after a good session at an Ontario online casino — you won't. Here's why that's actually good news.

Gambling winnings are not taxable income for most Canadians

Lottery winnings of any amount are explicitly listed among amounts that are not reported or taxed — unless the prize can be considered income from employment, a business, or property, or a prize for achievement. The CRA's position extends to casino and gambling winnings in the same way. Lottery and certain other winnings are non-taxable in Canada — however, if a taxpayer is in the business of gambling, the proceeds and losses are considered for income tax purposes.

That last part is the meaningful catch. For the overwhelming majority of Ottawa residents playing slots, blackjack, or poker recreationally on a licensed Ontario site, winnings are simply not income. No tax slip is issued because there's nothing to report.

The "professional gambler" exception

Where it gets more nuanced is if gambling constitutes a genuine business for you — systematic, consistent, profit-oriented activity rather than recreation. The CRA's Income Tax Folio S3-F9-C1 covers the tax treatment of gambling winnings and prizes from lottery schemes and pool system betting, and indicates whether and under what circumstances a particular type of receipt is included in calculating income for tax purposes. If the CRA determines your gambling activity rises to the level of a business, those winnings become taxable business income — and you'd be expected to track and report them yourself. There is no slip that triggers this; the obligation rests with you, and the line between "serious hobbyist" and "professional" is a facts-and-circumstances question best discussed with a tax professional.

What Ontario operators actually do document

Licensed Ontario online casinos are required by the AGCO's Registrar's Standards to maintain accurate player account records, and because everything runs through your account, your transaction history is always available in your player portal. This includes deposits, withdrawals, and game history. That's not a tax document — but if you ever needed to demonstrate winnings or losses to the CRA (say, in an audit context), certain casinos and gaming platforms keep records of winners or payouts over an established dollar amount. Your account statements from a regulated operator are far more useful as supporting documentation than anything from an offshore site would ever be.

One practical note: income earned on non-taxable winnings is itself taxable — for example, any interest you earn by investing your winnings must be reported on your return. So if you park a big win in a savings account and it generates interest, that interest shows up on a T5 from your bank, even though the original win never would.

To confirm you're playing on a site that's actually registered in Ontario's regulated market — and therefore subject to these player-protection standards — look for both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos on the operator's site, or check the official iGaming Ontario registry directly.
