How do Ontario online casinos verify that a new player is old enough to gamble before letting them play?

Age verification in Ontario's regulated online casino market is not left to the operator's discretion — it is a formal, multi-layered obligation baked into the AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming, and no account can go live until those checks are satisfied.
What happens at registration — before you can play a single hand
Relevant player information must be collected and saved upon registration and demonstrated to be complete, accurate, and validated before a player account is created. The Standards spell out exactly what that information must include: name, date of birth, address, a method of identification for subsequent log-on, player contact information, and information required under anti-money laundering legislation to be filed with FINTRAC. Date of birth isn't just a field on a form — it's the anchor for the age check, and the information is required to be verified before your account can be created.
That verification is done electronically, typically through a third-party identity bureau that cross-references your name, date of birth, and address against credit and government records in real time. Age verification for OLG.ca, for example, is conducted by Equifax. Private-market operators registered through iGaming Ontario use comparable services. If the automated check can't confirm your identity — say, because you've moved recently or your credit file is thin — most operators will ask you to upload a government-issued photo ID (driver's licence, passport, or provincial ID card) before the account is approved.
You must be 19 years of age or older to participate in all internet gaming products conducted and managed by iGaming Ontario. That's a hard floor, not a guideline. Minors are prevented from being able to open accounts, deposit funds, access sites, and gamble — and the AGCO treats this as one of its highest compliance priorities. An individual under 19 years of age is not eligible to play games on a gaming site.
The checks don't stop at sign-up either. Operators must re-verify registered player information if the list of prohibited and excluded individuals changes, to ensure all registered players are still eligible to play — and if they are not eligible, they are prohibited from gaming. So even an account that passes the initial check can be flagged and suspended later if eligibility changes (for instance, if a player self-excludes through BetGuard, Ontario's centralized self-exclusion service, which is also a compliance signal operators are required to act on).

Beyond the identity layer, the Registrar's Standards provide outcomes that operators must meet across key areas of regulatory risk, including the prevention of underage access, game integrity, privacy and information security, anti-money laundering, and responsible gambling. Advertising is also tightly controlled: marketing materials and communications shall not target underage persons, and shall not include underage individuals. The intent is that an under-19 player should not be reached, recruited, or admitted at any point in the funnel.
To confirm you're on a site where all of this applies, look for the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos — per iGaming Ontario, their presence signals the site is managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO. You can also cross-check against the full list of registered operators at the official iGaming Ontario registry, which is kept current as operators are added or removed.
