How do side bets in online table games work and how do they affect the overall house edge?

Side bets are optional wagers placed alongside your main bet in a table game — they resolve independently, typically based on a specific card or number combination, and they pay at elevated odds. That higher payout potential is the hook. The catch is that the house edge on a side bet is almost always dramatically larger than on the main game.
Why side bets carry a steeper edge
The house edge is a statistical advantage the house has over players — essentially an expected percentage return to the house, stemming from the gap between "true odds" and "payout odds." Side bets are designed around rare, high-payout outcomes, so that gap is much wider than on a standard hand.
Blackjack is the clearest example. By following basic strategy — hitting, standing, doubling, and splitting correctly — a player can reduce the house edge to around 0.5%. That's one of the best edges in any casino game. But the moment you add a side bet, you're playing a separate, mathematically distinct wager with its own (usually much worse) edge. Take the 21+3 side bet: it pays out if your first two cards and the dealer's face-up card form an eligible three-card poker hand — with payouts like 30:1 for a straight flush and 20:1 for three-of-a-kind. Those big numbers look appealing, but the rarity of hitting them means the house retains a substantially larger slice of every dollar wagered on that spot compared to the main hand.
Baccarat's Tie bet is another textbook case. The Banker hand carries a house edge of just 1.06%, and the Player hand 1.24% — but the Tie bet, which pays 8 to 1, carries a house edge of 14.36%, making it a very different proposition. Players who stick to Banker or Player are playing a tight game; players who regularly add the Tie are effectively playing a different, much costlier one.
Side bets don't change the edge on your main hand — the two wagers are mathematically separate. But they do raise your effective cost per round, because you're putting more money into action at worse odds each time you add one. If you play both a main hand and a side bet on every round, a larger share of your total wagered money is sitting in the higher-edge spot.
Progressive side bets add another layer
Some side bets feed a progressive jackpot. Blazing 7s, for example, is a progressive side bet in blackjack that pays based on how many 7s appear in your hand and the dealer's hand. Each wager placed contributes to a growing prize pool, and depending on which 7s you hit, you can qualify for a portion or all of it. The edge on these bets is harder to pin down because it shifts with the size of the jackpot, but it is generally higher than standard side bets — the house is funding the jackpot from somewhere.
For anyone in Ottawa playing at a regulated Ontario online casino (you can verify any operator is legitimate by checking for both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos on the site — that's the official signal it's managed by iGO and regulated by the AGCO), the math on side bets is the same regardless of whether you're playing at a live dealer table or an RNG version. The game rules determine the odds; the delivery method doesn't.
PlaySmart describes all side bets as "a risky gamble, meant for fun," and notes that using them to recover losses is never advised. That's the right frame. They're an entertainment add-on with a real cost attached — fine to use occasionally if you enjoy them, but not a sensible regular strategy given the edge differential.
