What happens to my account and balance if I move from Ottawa to another province?
getting-started · Last reviewed June 19, 2026
Your real concern here is probably this: will I lose access to my account and my money once I'm no longer an Ontario resident? The short answer, straight from iGaming Ontario's own published guidance, is reassuring — but the nuance matters.
Residency vs. physical location — two very different things
A player's residency status is not a factor in whether they can play on websites offered by registered and authorized operators. That's a direct quote from iGaming Ontario's operator FAQ, and it's the key point. Ontario's regulated market is built around where your device is physically located when you play, not where you officially live.
The requirement is that players must physically be in Ontario to play legally — but regardless of that, players can register and manage their account (e.g., deposit or withdraw funds) while physically outside of Ontario.
So moving to British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, or anywhere else does not automatically close your account or freeze your balance. You can still log in, update your details, make deposits, and — importantly — withdraw your funds from outside the province.
What you actually can't do once you've moved
The thing you lose is the ability to play. Games on gaming sites shall be provided only within Ontario, unless they are conducted in conjunction with the government of another province. Operators are required to enforce this technically: operators must put in place mechanisms to detect and dynamically monitor the location of a player attempting to play a game and to block unverified attempts to play a game, with location checks occurring at reasonable intervals.
In practice, this means the moment you try to launch a game while sitting in, say, Calgary, the platform will detect you're outside Ontario and block the session. Your account isn't gone — you just can't wager from there.
Practical steps before you pack up
- Withdraw your balance before or shortly after the move. There's no regulatory reason you can't do this from your new province, but doing it while you still have easy access to your Ontario-linked payment methods avoids any friction.
- Update your contact details. Most operators require accurate account information. Failing to update your address could create issues down the line, particularly if identity verification is ever triggered.
- Check the operator's own terms. The iGaming Ontario framework sets the floor, but individual operators may have their own policies on dormant accounts or address changes. Log in and review your account's terms, or contact support directly — that's always the authoritative source for your specific situation.
- Look into your new province's options. Most provinces have their own regulated online gambling offerings. You can verify registered Ontario operators at the iGaming Ontario site directory if you ever return or visit.
One practical note: if you have any responsible-gambling tools set up on your Ontario account — spending limits, cool-down periods — those remain tied to that account regardless of where you live. Ontario's centralized self-exclusion service, BetGuard, covers all regulated Ontario operators; all igaming operators in Ontario participate in BetGuard, a tool that allows people to opt out of all regulated online gambling in Ontario. If you've used it, that exclusion doesn't follow you to another province's platforms — and it doesn't disappear just because you've moved. Bottom line: your account and balance are safe. What changes is simply that the games go dark the moment you cross the provincial border — and that's by design, not a bug.
