What is the minimum age required to create an account at a legal Ontario online casino?

19 — and that's a hard floor, not a guideline
You must be 19 years of age or older to participate in all internet gaming products conducted and managed by iGaming Ontario. That applies to every casino, poker room, and sportsbook operating legally in Ontario — including the sites available to players in Ottawa. There are no exceptions for "just browsing" the real-money sections or for creating a dormant account.
The rule comes directly from the AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming. The Standards explicitly prohibit access to any individual under 19 years of age where the gaming site is a Casino or an iGaming site. The AGCO's Standards require operators to ensure only eligible individuals are permitted into a gambling site and strictly prohibit access to anyone under 19 years of age. That's not just a terms-of-service clause operators write themselves — it's a regulatory requirement the AGCO actively enforces.
What age verification actually looks like at registration
When you open an account at any regulated Ontario site, you'll be asked for your date of birth — and that information has to be validated before your account goes live. Strong identity and age verification processes are important responsible gambling measures intended to protect underage consumers and those who have self-excluded from online gambling by preventing them from accessing operator websites. In practice, most platforms run an automated identity check against government-issued ID data, and some will ask you to upload a document before you can deposit or withdraw. If the check can't confirm you're 19+, the account won't be activated.
Regulated sites have controls preventing underage access and measures to enable more responsible gambling. That's a condition of their registration, not a voluntary add-on.
How to confirm a site is actually registered in Ontario
For Ottawa players, the easiest check is the iGaming Ontario operator directory at igamingontario.ca — it lists every site that has completed both AGCO registration and a signed operating agreement with iGO. Being a fully registered and authorized Operator in the igaming market means the organization has successfully received a registration by the AGCO and, with the exception of OLG.ca, has executed an operating agreement with iGO. Regulated sites also display both the iGaming Ontario logo and the BetGuard logo — seeing both is a quick visual signal that you're on a legitimate, AGCO-regulated platform rather than an offshore site that operates outside Ontario's rules entirely.
If you ever want to step back from play, BetGuard (betguard.ca) lets anyone 19+ in Ontario self-exclude from all registered operators in one request — and ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) is there if you'd like to talk through your options with someone.
